Playa Ocotal, Guanacaste: Complete Travel and Photography Guide
Nestled along the Guanacaste coast between Playas del Coco and Playa Hermosa, Playa Ocotal is one of those beaches that rewards photographers who venture beyond the obvious Costa Rica hotspots. The rocky headlands, fishing boats, and circling seabirds create a natural composition that never gets old.

Unlike the long stretches of sand that define nearby beaches, Ocotal is characterized by its intimate scale — a small cove flanked by volcanic boulders, with clear water that’s ideal for underwater photography when conditions are calm.
Photography Highlights at Playa Ocotal

Seabird colonies are the star attraction here. Magnificent Frigatebirds soar on the coastal thermals year-round, and brown boobies nest on the rocky headlands. The birds often pass close to the shore, making them ideal subjects for flight photography with a telephoto lens.
Fishing boats anchored in the small cove add a human element to seascape compositions. The traditional pangas (small fishing boats) are colorful and weathered, and the fishermen are often willing to let photographers aboard for a small fee — a great opportunity for lifestyle wildlife shots.
Sunset photography is exceptional at Ocotal. The western exposure means the sun drops into the Pacific over the water, and the rocky headlands on either side of the cove create natural framing. The best months for sunset photography run from November through May.
Underwater photography is possible when the water is calm — typically during the dry season from December through April. The rocky bottom and relatively shallow depth make Ocotal suitable for compact underwater housings and action cameras.
Wildlife Around Playa Ocotal
The Guanacaste coast is drier than the Caribbean slope, which means different wildlife. Around Ocotal and the nearby hills, you’re more likely to encounter white-tailed deer, variegated squirrels, and tropical dry forest birds like the White-throated Magpie-Jay. The Howler Monkeys that populate the trees near the beach road are reliable subjects.
Offshore, you’re within range of the fishing grounds that attract seabirds and, seasonally, humpback whales. The best whale watching months are December through March and July through September.
Best Time to Visit Playa Ocotal
For photography, the dry season (December through April) is ideal: clear skies, calm water, and excellent light. The green season (May through November) brings dramatic afternoon clouds and lush vegetation, but afternoon rain can disrupt outdoor shoots. However, the post-rain light in Guanacaste — especially a clearing storm with sun breaking through — produces some of the most dramatic coastal photography in Costa Rica.
Early morning is the best time for seabird photography, when the air is coolest and the birds are most active over the water.
Nearby Photography Locations
Playa Ocotal makes an excellent base for exploring the northern Guanacaste coast. Within a short drive are Playas del Coco — a livelier beach town with a fishing fleet — and Playa Hermosa, known for its black sand and consistent surf. The Papagayo Peninsula to the north offers luxury resort scenery and quieter coves.
For a full day of wildlife photography, combine Ocotal with a visit to the Palo Verde National Park wetlands, which are about 90 minutes inland and host enormous concentrations of waterbirds including wood storks, jabiru storks, and countless herons and egrets.
